The management consultancy WTW has appointed Nikolaus Schmidt-Narischkin as Chairman of the Management Board of Willis Towers Watson Investments GmbH, effective June 1, 2025.
“Nikolaus Schmidt-Narischkin has many years of experience and extensive expertise in the risk management of occupational pension commitments and the investment of corresponding funds,” says Dr. Reiner Schwinger, Head of Central Europe at WTW. “We are delighted that he is taking over the chairmanship of the management board.”
Schmidt-Narischkin succeeds Matthias Paetzel, who will be leaving the company. “We thank Matthias Paetzel for his contribution to the investment business. He has made a significant contribution to the further development of our business in Western Europe. We wish him every success in his professional future,” Schwinger said.
Investment business faces challenges
Investors are currently facing a multitude of challenges. Political tensions, volatile stock markets, and inflation characterize the environment in which decisions must be made. Schmidt-Narischkin says: “The combination of US tariff policy and the German government’s announced special fund has contributed to a short-term decline in the funding level of pension commitments in Germany, which had recently reached record highs. A temporary low was reached in April, and since then the situation has recovered significantly, although volatility remains high.”
The geopolitical uncertainty of recent months has compromised the reliability of the framework, which is crucial for investment decisions. How can companies manage their pension assets robustly in such a tense environment? “From WTW-Investment’s perspective, the key to long-term success, especially in difficult market situations, lies in diversification,” says Schmidt-Narischkin. “However, this goes hand in hand with increasingly complex investment strategies. For this reason, we are seeing a trend for companies to outsource their capital investments. WTW-Investment is a strong partner because we have the expertise and capacity to strategically align and manage portfolios.”
