The Dutch pension market is one of the largest pension markets in Europe, with invested assets of 1,400 billion euro. These pension assets are largely supported by 150 active pension funds, with the largest 10 pension funds managing 70%. But also, by smaller pension vehicles like APF’s (algemene pensioenfondsen) and PPI’s (premiepensioeninstellingen) – commercial pension entities owned by insurance companies. In addition, the assets of all Dutch insurance companies are covered.

The British pension market is the largest in Europe with a total of 3,800 billion euros of assets under management. These assets are largely managed by pension funds, investment pooling companies and DC Master Trusts. A distinction can be made between public pension funds such as the 86 Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) and private pension funds. The UK has both DB and DC schemes, but also hybrid schemes.

The Swiss institutional market
The Swiss pension market is one of the largest in Europe with 1,140 billion euro in assets under management. In total there are approximately 1350 pension funds, although a significant number of them are very small. The Swiss market is characterized by relatively many medium-sized and small pension funds, i.e. funds with assets between CHF 20 billion and CHF 1 billion. 70% of the pension assets are managed by the top 100 pension funds.

The Norwegian pension market is by far the largest of the Nordics in terms of both the number of pension funds and pension assets. This has everything to do with the presence of the Norway Government Pension Fund Global. This pension fund has a total of 1,300 billion euro in assets under management.
