Sigurbjörn Sigurbjörnsson has requested from the board of directors of SL Pension Fund that he step down as the fund’s managing director in May next year after having worked for the fund for 37 years, of which as managing director since October 1, 1997. Guðmundur Stefán Steindórsson, Head of Risk Management, will take over as managing director on June 1, 2025.
“This has been a long and successful time and I have been very lucky with my colleagues and the board,” says Sigurbjörn. “I believe this is the right time for this change, SL Pension Fund’s position is very good, it is heading for good returns in 2024 and the operations are very solid. During my time as managing director, ten pension funds have merged with SL, returns have been very good, the portfolio is solid, the rights of fund members are balanced and the fund’s operations are certified. I am therefore leaving very satisfied.”
SL Pension Fund is the fund that has delivered the best returns in the long term and the fund has never reduced pension payments. The fund has also increased pensioner rights five times.
Guðmundur Stefán Steindórsson, Head of Risk Management, will take over the position of Managing Director of the fund in June next year. Guðmundur has worked at SL Pension Fund since 2016 as Head of Risk Management. He has been involved in a variety of projects within the fund and knows the operations very well. Guðmundur is an engineer, born in 1980 and had extensive experience working in the financial market before he started working for SL Pension Fund.
“I appreciate the trust shown in me by the board,” says Guðmundur. “I know SL Pension Fund and the strong staff who work for it very well and am looking forward to taking on this new role.”
“SL Pension Fund has been a prudent pension fund under Sigurbjörn’s management and is delivering a very good asset that Guðmundur knows well,” says Magnús Björn Jónsson, Chairman of the Board at SL Pension Fund. “The Board would like to thank Sigurbjörn for his work for SL Pension Fund and its fund members. Sigurbjörn has managed the fund conscientiously and faithfully, the fund has grown and prospered under his management and assets have multiplied. It is also extremely important that pensioner payments have never had to be cut, and that the fund has delivered returns that are among the best in Icelandic pension funds. The Board believes that it is important to continue the good practices and procedures that have been built up at the fund. The Board therefore agreed to appoint Guðmundur as Managing Director.”
