Veritas Pension Insurance and 586 other investors have signed the 2021 Global Investor Statement to Governments on the Climate Crisis, with the aim of accelerating government actions to fight climate change.
“Together with other institutional investors and using common practices, our ability to affect change is much better than if everyone tried to clear their own path alone,” says Kari Vatanen, Chief Investment Officer at Veritas.
The statement calls on governments to strengthen their Nationally Determined Contributions before the United Nations Climate Conference in November. The statement has been drafted by The Investor Agenda, who aim to accelerate the transition to a net-zero emissions economy.
The statement urges governments to do their part to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius and to ensure a transition to a net-zero emissions economy by 2050 at the latest.
“This joint statement is an excellent example of an effective way of influencing, with a large number of global investors and assets to back it up. We could not affect this change alone,” says Eveliina Leino, Sustainability Manager at Veritas.
Veritas’ own aim is to achieve a carbon-neutral investment portfolio by 2035.
“This aim requires a gradual reduction in the carbon footprint already in the near future, and we are actively working to achieve that,” says Leino.
